Adelaide Bariatric Centre

Adelaide Bariatric Centre was established in 1995 as the first obesity clinic in Adelaide. It has now performed over 4000 bariatric operations from the laparoscopic gastric band to the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and laparoscopic gastric bypass. Adelaide Bariatric Centre firmly believes however that the best way to achieve sustained and significant weight loss is not through surgery alone. As a result we pioneered in Adelaide the multidisciplinary holistic support programme for the management of obesity. This has resulted in some of the best outcomes for patients with weight problems.

The Adelaide Bariatric Centre was established by bariatric surgeons Professor Jim Toouli and Dr Lilian Kow in 1995. Bariatric surgeon Dr Jacob Chisholm joined the group in 2010. The surgeons work closely with bariatric practitioners, dietitians, exercise physiologists, psychologists and bariatric nurses all on the same site and working to the same goal.

ASSOC PROF LILIAN KOW

Associate Professor Lilian Kow is a senior consultant surgeon at Flinders Medical Centre and Clinical Associate Professor at Flinders University of South Australia. She has been involved in training surgeons in bariatric surgery nationally and internationally. Together with Professor Jim Toouli, she introduced the Swedish Adjustable gastric band to Australia and is internationally one of the leading investigators of vagal block therapy for the treatment of obesity. Lilian is a council member of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity (IFSO), President of the IFSO-Asia Pacific Chapter and the past president of the Australian and New Zealand Metabolic and Obesity Surgery Society (ANZMOSS). Over the years, Lilian has visited many bariatric clinics around the world and is of the firm belief that bariatric surgery works better with an effective support programme. Lilian has been at the forefront along with her colleagues at the Adelaide Bariatric Centre in developing a very effective multidisciplinary programme for supporting our patients in their weight loss journey. The programme in Adelaide was one of the initial ones adopted in Australia and internationally and the first to be used in South Australia. Lilian and her colleagues are firmly committed to providing this very important multidisciplinary support for our patients: a programme which clearly makes the Adelaide Bariatric Centre the leading centre for the management of weight loss in South Australia and one of the leading centres in the world.

MR JACOB CHISHOLM

Jacob Chisholm is an upper gastrointestinal and general surgeon with an interest in weight loss and metabolic surgery. Jacob received his undergraduate degree (MBBS) from the University of Adelaide, a postgraduate research degree (Masters of Surgery) from Flinders University and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS). He trained in surgery at the Royal Adelaide and Flinders Medical Centre before completing a bariatric fellowship in 2007. Jacob was appointed chief surgical resident at Flinders Medical Centre in 2008 and has been a consultant surgeon at that institution since 2010. Jacob joined the Adelaide Bariatric Centre in 2010. Jacob has presented at both national and international obesity meetings in addition to authoring multiple publications in leading obesity journals including Obesity Surgery and Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases. A particular interest is the deleterious impact of obesity on liver function and how obesity surgery can reverse these changes. Jacob is a member of professional upper gastrointestinal and obesity surgery bodies OSSANZ, IFSO and ANZGOSA. Jacob continues to be involved in the provision of bariatric surgery in the public hospital setting as well. Jacob performed the first sleeve gastrectomy at Flinders Medical Centre in 2010. Jacob believes in an individualised approach to obesity surgery rather than one operation for all. He is experienced in gastric band, gastric sleeve (sleeve gastrectomy) and gastric bypass all performed as a keyhole procedure. He also has experience in revisional surgery, in particular the conversion of gastric band to gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy through the keyhole approach. Jacob is also interested in novel endoscopic (through the mouth) techniques for the management of obesity and is proficient in endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, intragastric balloon and Endobarrier insertion.
