Dr Justin Bessell

Dr. Justin Bessell is a General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon at Australian Obesity Surgery, Calvary Wakefield Hospital. He is a Senior Lecturer in Surgery at Flinders & Adelaide Universities, and a Senior Consultant Surgeon at Flinders Medical Centre. Dr. Bessell provides visiting surgical services to the Darwin Private Hospital and to the Australian Defence Force. He is a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve, and has deployed to war zones including East Timor (twice) and Solomon Islands, and to Banda Aceh in support of ADF military operations. He is formerly the Chairman of the Military Section of the College of Surgeons, and the former Chairman of the S.A. Regional Board in General Surgery. As well as his specialty of Bariatric. Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery, he continues to perform a wide variety of general, upper gastrointestinal and laparoscopic surgery, and interventional endoscopy procedures, and colonoscopy bowel cancer screening. In 2003 Dr. Bessell founded Australian Obesity Surgery, which enshrined the concept of a holistic, multi-disciplinary approach to medical weight loss – a collaboration which embeds allied healthcare professionals within the matrix of obesity management using scientifically-proven, evidence-based therapies. This approach has since developed into the standard of care for Bariatric practices. Dr. Bessell trained in Adelaide, during which period he completed a Doctorate in minimally-invasive surgery culminating in a six month period of research into robotically-assisted laparoscopic surgery in Germany. Prior to returning home, he spent a further two years in Brisbane and Leicester. He is married with 3 children and enjoys racing bicycles and cars. Dr. Bessell has over 50 published medical articles and abstracts in peer-reviewed international surgical journals, and has presented innumerable papers and research topics at national and international surgical meetings and conferences.

Dr Jon Shenfine

Dr Jon Shenfine is an Upper Gastrointestinal surgeon with surgical interests in weight loss (Bariatric), oesophageal and gastric cancer, acid reflux disorders and anti-reflux surgery, gallstones and hernias. He has a particular interest in advanced laparoscopic or minimally invasive surgical techniques resulting in smaller scars, a more rapid return to normal activity and less pain post-operatively. Born in England, after qualifying as a doctor, Dr Shenfine spent three years studying patients with oesophageal cancer, leading to the award of a Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD). His surgical training was undertaken in Melbourne, Brisbane and Britain. He became a Consultant Surgeon in September 2008 at the largest oesophago-gastric cancer unit in the UK with a national and international reputation for clinical work and research. He migrated to Australia in 2012 and took on a specialist Consultant Surgeon role in Adelaide. Dr Shenfine is a Fellow of both the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS). He has an international reputation for research in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Surgery at the University of Adelaide and teaches at the University. He speaks internationally on Upper GI Surgery and helped to set up an Oesophageal Cancer Awareness campaign in the UK.
